Emily Sedgwick
(she, her, hers)
Community-Based Intern
Emily Sedgwick joins Anesis Therapy as a graduate student in the UW-Madison School of Social Work MSW program, focusing on Generalist Social Work in Community Agencies. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Rehabilitation Psychology from UW-Madison in 2021.
Following her undergraduate education, Emily worked as a special education teacher and case manager at a transition program, supporting young adults on the autism spectrum in developing independent life skills. This experience has given her valuable insights into the unique challenges and strengths of neurodivergent individuals.
"Mental health treatment has fundamentally changed my life for the better," Emily shares. "My own therapy journey has allowed me to interact with the world in a much more joyful and fulfilling way, and I believe that everyone deserves that same opportunity. I aspire to be a positive part of others' mental health journeys."
Emily brings extensive experience working with individuals who have limited verbal communication, priding herself on her ability to learn diverse communication methods to form meaningful connections. "There are so many ways to communicate," she notes, "and I think it's important to utilize as many as we can to make sure everyone's voices are heard."
As a passionate advocate for fat liberation and body neutrality work, Emily brings a social justice perspective that is often overlooked in mental health settings. Drawing from her lived experience, she understands the challenges of existing in a fat body in a society that stigmatizes larger bodies. "In every opportunity I have," she emphasizes, "I strive to make sure the people I work with know that they deserve respect and compassion, regardless of what they look like."
Outside of her academic and professional pursuits, Emily enjoys spending time with loved ones, including her cat, Bingley. She expresses her creativity as a multi-media artist with a passion for embroidery and collage, and loves trying new types of crafts. An avid reader, especially of fiction and fantasy, Emily also enjoys watching reality TV from a sociological perspective (and for the drama). And a fun fact about Emily—she lived in rural Alaska for part of her childhood!
