Serena Yu

Psychotherapist, LPC - IT

Serena W. Yu began her career as an English teacher because of her interest in “story,” not just the literary kind, but the real stories lived out by her students and by the community as a whole. After 28 years in education, she carries this love of story to counseling, believing that when one understands their life narrative, they better understand themselves and the strengths and resources they hold within them.

Being a second-generation Asian American, she believes that her family of origin and social environment significantly shaped her personality as she navigated between traditional, cultural values, and Western values. And she believes that every person is influenced by a multitude of systems, constantly navigating between expectations and responsibilities. From within these influences, individuals create their life stories, telling themselves and others who they think they are. Serena has a genuine desire to connect with her clients and support them in understanding how their experiences have affected them. She believes that once a person understands their life trajectory, they can make choices that build on their strengths and promote mental wellness.

Serena utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy and narrative therapy (including trauma work), supporting individuals to develop life goals, recognize their strengths, and learn strategies that allow them to thrive. Serena is trained in EMDR.
