JUDGE EVERETT MITCHELL

The Honorable Reverend Everett D. Mitchell, a distinguished judge and community advocate based in Dane County, has significantly impacted the fields of juvenile justice, mental health advocacy, and community service. With a robust educational background, including law from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Mitchell has been instrumental in promoting family reunification and dismantling the juvenile to adult prison pipeline. His work extends beyond the courtroom to include mental health advocacy, support for the LGBTQ community, and pro bono legal services for underserved communities. Judge Mitchell's commitment to justice, equity, and community engagement exemplifies his dedication to making a tangible difference in the lives of those he serves.

Participants will engage with local and statewide initiatives aimed at promoting a reconnection to ancestral traditions across the American continent. Through an analytical lens, the session will also delve into the ethical challenges and opportunities that arise when incorporating ancestral knowledge into health equity efforts, providing a comprehensive understanding of how these practices can enhance Latine mental health care.

Attendees will delve into how intergenerational trauma shapes perceptions of wellness and learn about the enduring impact of historical injustices on contemporary attitudes towards self-care.Additionally, the session will offer a path for personal development, challenging attendees to recognize and navigate family traditions and behaviors that may hinder wellness. By identifying barriers and exploring avenues for self-care within cultural contexts, this session aims to equip individuals with the tools for building a legacy of wellness and liberation.

  • This session invites mental health professionals to comfortably dive into the complexities of merging personal and professional identities, especially within the context of maintaining ethical integrity. Participants will critically analyze the current APA ethical codes, identifying gaps in multicultural considerations, and collaboratively work towards envisioning a set of liberatory ethics that resonate with multicultural clinicians. Participants will be equipped with innovative approaches and new perspectives to apply ethical principles in a way that honors the richness of diverse identities and experiences.

  • This session embarks on a critical examination of how systemic falsehoods and deception undermine social justice efforts, especially in the realms of racial justice and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). Through this dialogue, participants will explore strategies that support not just individual well-being but also foster an inclusive, empathetic workplace environment conducive to a mental health renaissance.

  • "Breaking the Silence" is a session aimed at shedding light on men's mental health from a multitude of perspectives. This discussion is not only for clinicians seeking effective approaches in supporting their male clients but also for anyone who plays a role in a man's healing journey. The session is designed to empower participants with an understanding of how to better support the men in their lives through their mental health journey. Additionally, attendees will be equipped with knowledge about valuable resources, enabling them to guide men towards therapy and other forms of mental health support. This session is a call to action to break the stigma surrounding men's mental health and to cultivate an environment where men feel encouraged and supported to seek help.
