Rick Badger

(He/him)

Psychotherapist

Meet William (Rick) Theodore Badger, Jr., fondly known as Rick, is a Licensed Professional Counselor at Anesis. With a stunning career spanning 45 years in the mental health field, Rick's depth of knowledge and experience have become invaluable assets to our clinic.

Rick's academic journey includes a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and Government from Ohio University, followed by a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Wheaton College, Illinois. His areas of specialization encompass premarital preparation, marital counseling, and depression and grief counseling. He is also a trained Family Systems therapist.

In his practice, Rick passionately advocates for the integration of sound psychology and healthy theology in addressing mental health issues—a philosophy that aligns seamlessly with our clinic's ethos. As part of this commitment, he's currently engaged in "Oh Happy Day," an innovative program developed by Dr. Earlise Ward from UW-Madison. This program pioneers a unique approach to treating depression in African-Americans, fusing elements of theology and psychology to offer comprehensive, culturally sensitive care.

Rick's vast professional experiences extend beyond counseling. As an Ordained Minister since 1983 and a Senior Pastor at New Beginnings Alliance Church in Madison for 19 years, he brings an enriched understanding of community needs and human behavior. His past role as a retired Federal Probation Officer for Western Wisconsin, with specializations in electronic monitoring, mental health, and gang culture, further amplifies the unique perspectives he brings to his counseling practice.

His personal mission statement is a reflection of his dedication: "Employ counseling skills that will reduce pain and stress, increase hope and vision, and improve the lives of clients." This dedication to transformative care is evident in each interaction with his clients, embodying the safe, supportive environment that Anesis strives for.

Outside his professional life, Rick indulges in his love for bowling and maintains an active membership in a bowling league. He cherishes his long-standing friendships, regularly meeting with three college friends since 1976 via Zoom to share life updates, successes, failures, and reflections on the world at large.

Rick joined our Anesis family in his 60s, drawn by our commitment to blend healthy psychology with culture, employing a holistic approach to mental health care. His broad experience, profound wisdom, and tireless dedication make him an irreplaceable member of our team and a reassuring presence for our clients. His journey underscores the level of care and commitment that Anesis takes pride in offering to our community.
